onsemi and FORVIA HELLA have extended their long-standing strategic collaboration, formalising a new long-term agreement focused on next-generation automotive power MOSFETs technology. The deal centres on the adoption of onsemi’s PowerTrench T10 MOSFETs across FORVIA HELLA’s advanced automotive platforms, reflecting the increasing importance of efficient and scalable power devices in vehicle electrification.

For eeNews Europe readers, the announcement is relevant as it highlights how Tier 1 suppliers and semiconductor vendors are aligning power semiconductor roadmaps with emerging automotive architectures, including zonal designs and software-defined vehicles. It also provides insight into how incremental device-level improvements could influence system efficiency and cost targets in future vehicle platforms.

PowerTrench T10 targets efficiency and density

Under the agreement, FORVIA HELLA will integrate onsemi’s PowerTrench T10 MOSFET technology into a broad range of automotive applications. According to onsemi, the T10 generation is designed to reduce conduction and switching losses while improving power density, potentially enabling more compact designs at the system level. The devices are manufactured at onsemi’s East Fishkill facility in New York, which the company positions as a key asset for automotive-grade power semiconductors.

The collaboration builds on more than two decades of cooperation between the two companies. In the context of rising electrical loads driven by electrification, advanced driver assistance systems and increased compute content, power MOSFET performance is becoming a more visible design parameter. FORVIA HELLA is expected to use the T10 devices in areas such as body electronics, power distribution and other efficiency-sensitive subsystems.

Sven Hoenecke, Executive Vice President Purchasing at FORVIA HELLA, said: “onsemi’s next-generation MOSFETs are a key enabler for our advanced automotive platforms. This collaboration allows us to offer our customers future-proof solutions with greater efficiency and reliability, supporting electrification and delivering innovative, cost-effective solutions that meet the demands of modern automotive systems.”

Long-term alignment with automotive roadmaps

From onsemi’s perspective, the agreement reinforces its strategy of deep, long-term engagements with automotive customers rather than short product cycles. Simon Keeton, Group President of onsemi’s Power Solutions Group, commented: “This extension underscores the strength of our 25-year collaboration with FORVIA HELLA and highlights the trust they place in onsemi to deliver next-generation power solutions. The integration of the T10 power MOSFETs will help enable the future of electrified and software-defined vehicles, where efficiency, performance, and scalability are critical.”

While the announcement does not disclose volumes or specific vehicle programmes, it illustrates how power semiconductor choices are increasingly made with a decade-long horizon in mind. For European engineers, the collaboration offers a practical example of how device-level innovations in automotive power MOSFETs could translate into incremental gains at the platform level, particularly as OEMs balance efficiency, cost and reliability requirements.
