The Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA) has unveiled two major updates for the connected home ecosystem at IFA 2025 in Berlin: the HCA Energy Management Specification 2.0 and the first HCA Insurance Specification. HCA plans to release both publicly by the end of 2025.

For eeNews Europe readers, the announcement underscores new opportunities around interoperability, grid services, and data-driven insurance products—areas where energy, electronics, and IoT players intersect.

Expanding energy management features

Building on the version 1.0 release at CES 2024, the new HCA Energy Management Specification adds stronger cybersecurity, expanded demand response options, and enhanced interactions between smart appliances and energy management platforms.

“With the launch of Energy Management Specification 2.0, we’re not only reinforcing the technical backbone for interoperability – we’re also equipping consumers with practical tools to plan, manage, and budget their household energy use more effectively,” said Marco Bulgheroni, HCA board member and Chief Digital Technology Officer at Electrolux.

The update is designed to give utilities and aggregators better tools to coordinate devices in demand response programs. “This update strengthens support for smart appliances in demand response, giving utilities and aggregators clearer tools to enroll, coordinate and manage devices,” added Michael Siemann, HCA Energy Management Task Force Chair and Director of Technology at Resideo Grid Services.

Insurance enters the connected home

For the first time, HCA is extending its scope beyond energy efficiency to insurance. The Insurance Specification 1.0 defines a standardized API that connects appliance data with insurers, enabling new services such as risk mitigation, cost savings, and customized insurance products.

“HSB is exploring and developing solutions that leverage the largely untapped value of IoT technology and data within the connected home ecosystem,” said John B. Riggs, HCA Board Member and CTO & SVP, Applied Technology Solutions & President, Meshify at HSB.

Global adoption

HCA also announced a new Korea-based special interest group (SIG) including Hyundai Development Company and Hyundai Engineering and Construction, working with the Korea Association of AI Smart Home to promote adoption.

“The benefit for HCA adopters is once they have integrated with one of our members, connecting to other members can be as simple as changing the URLs and security keys,” said John Hughes, HCA Technical WG Chair and Chief Engineer at Trane Technologies.

With its latest specifications, HCA is looking to establish a foundation for smarter, safer, and more sustainable homes—linking energy management, appliance interoperability, and even insurance.
