D-Wave Quantum Inc. has strengthened its foothold in Europe with a €10 million agreement with Swiss Quantum Technology SA (SQT) to deploy an Advantage2 quantum computer in Italy. The new D-Wave quantum system will support Italy’s Q-Alliance initiative and accelerate European progress in next-generation quantum computing research and commercialization.

This deal highlights a key step in Europe’s quantum technology expansion — blending hardware innovation with digital transformation goals. It also underscores the growing commercial potential of quantum annealing for solving real-world industrial and scientific problems.

Expanding quantum access in Europe

Announced during the Digital Innovation Forum – ComoLake 2025, the agreement includes an option for SQT to purchase the Advantage2 system outright. Once deployed, the machine will be accessible to customers through D-Wave’s Leap™ real-time quantum cloud service, enabling research institutions, enterprises, and startups across Europe to run quantum and hybrid quantum applications.

The Advantage2 system represents D-Wave’s latest and most advanced quantum processor, featuring over 4,400 qubits. It is designed to tackle optimization and AI problems that are beyond the practical limits of classical computing systems. Importantly, its energy-efficient architecture also aligns with sustainability goals in advanced computing — a growing priority for both public and private sectors.

Dr. Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave, said the deal marks a key step in expanding the company’s footprint across Europe. “The agreement with SQT is an important milestone in our ongoing effort to expand global access to our fleet of annealing quantum computers and to help our rapidly growing customer base solve computationally complex problems faster and more efficiently,” Baratz said. “As Europe extends its quantum leadership, we believe that D-Wave’s production-grade annealing quantum computing technology will serve as a critical component, fueling quantum application development and adoption now.”

Driving sustainable quantum innovation

For Swiss Quantum Technology, the decision reflects both strategic and environmental considerations. “Traditional computing is reaching its limits—not just in performance, but in energy efficiency,” said Enrico De Mitri, CEO of SQT. “Hosting an Advantage2 system reinforces our commitment to help meet the growing need for advanced computation without accelerating energy consumption. We believe D-Wave’s technology could be essential in delivering powerful solutions with a significantly smaller energy footprint.”

The deployment will also play a crucial role in supporting Italy’s Q-Alliance initiative, which aims to establish a robust European ecosystem for quantum computing research and commercialization. By hosting one of D-Wave’s production-grade systems, Italy strengthens its position as a regional hub for quantum innovation and collaboration.

Building a quantum future

D-Wave, headquartered in Palo Alto, California, remains one of the few companies developing both annealing and gate-model quantum systems. The company reports that more than 100 organizations have used its technology, with over 200 million problems submitted to its systems to date.

As Europe doubles down on quantum R&D and digital transformation, collaborations like D-Wave and SQT’s are setting the stage for a new era of industrial-scale quantum adoption—bringing production-ready quantum computing from theory to practical deployment.
